Young horses

Starting and producing young horses

Simone specialises in starting and producing young horses, including thoroughbreds and purpose-bred sport horses.

Young horses are introduced to ridden work progressively, with an emphasis on confidence, correct foundations and positive experiences. Training can continue through the early stages of development to prepare a horse for competition, sale or its next rider.

Young horse progression

How a young horse moves forward

Each horse moves through these stages at its own pace. Some arrive part way along, and some stop where their job asks them to.

Starting under saddle

First ridden work, introduced quietly and progressively.

Young horse pre-training

Building the basic routine, balance and willingness to work.

Foundation flatwork

Correct, systematic flatwork that everything later depends on.

Introduction to poles and jumping

Gymnastic work that develops technique and confidence over a fence.

Exposure to different training environments

Hills, the beach and away from home, so new places stop being an event.

Competition preparation

Getting a horse fit, focused and ready for its first outings.

Preparation and presentation for sale

Producing and presenting a horse honestly for its next rider.
