Pre-Training & Breaking In

Young horses started right, one horse at a time

Starting under saddle and pre-training for thoroughbreds and purpose-bred sport horses.

Starting young horses

A quiet, progressive start under saddle

Sim specialises in starting and producing young horses, including thoroughbreds and purpose-bred sport horses.

Young horses are introduced to ridden work progressively, with an emphasis on confidence, correct foundations and positive experiences. Each programme is built around the horse's temperament, physical maturity and what it is going on to do.

Pre-training may include

  • Starting under saddle (breaking in)
  • Young horse pre-training
  • Foundation flatwork
  • Introduction to poles and jumping
  • Hill work and beach conditioning
  • Fitness and physical development
  • Nutrition and general condition
  • Preparation and presentation for sale

Suited to thoroughbreds heading to the track or a new career, and to young sport horses on their way to eventing, dressage, show jumping or pleasure riding.

After the start

Carried through to the next stage

Training can continue past the first rides, through the early stages of development, so a horse goes on to the track, competition, sale or its next rider with a sound foundation.

Young horse progression

How a young horse moves forward

Each horse moves through these stages at its own pace. Some arrive part way along, and some stop where their job asks them to.

Starting under saddle

First ridden work, introduced quietly and progressively.

Young horse pre-training

Building the basic routine, balance and willingness to work.

Foundation flatwork

Correct, systematic flatwork that everything later depends on.

Introduction to poles and jumping

Gymnastic work that develops technique and confidence over a fence.

Exposure to different training environments

Hills, the beach and away from home, so new places stop being an event.

Ready for the next stage

Prepared and presented honestly for the track, competition, sale or a new rider.
